iTunes library will not load on iPad/iPhone

I use a Mac mini running iTunes to store my entire media library. I do this because the Internet is either slow or unreliable when you want to watch a movie. So I turn on home sharing to share with my devices. The problem the last couple years is the library loads very slowly if at all.

* Running the latest version of OS X

* Running the latest version of iTunes

* Running the latest version of iOS on an iPad Air 2

* Homesharing logged into and verified on all devices

* I have rebooted the server, restarted iTunes, rebooted iPad numerous times.

* I have no problem with homesharing to Apple TV, that works perfect.

* All routers and wireless transmitters in the house are by Apple. And they are the latest versions with the latest software.

I open videos on the iPad, and select shared then select my media server. The circle spends to indicate that it is doing something, then it begins to fill as if it's downloading data. It almost never completes and if it does can take hours.

Anyone have any suggestions, after carefully reading the above, as to why this is such a problem?
