whilst I am aware that there have been major issues with the 15 and 17 inch 2011 models - I was wondering if anyone has had issues with the 13 inch model. The logic board in mine has had catastrophic failure and is now a very expensive table mat. The machine was barely 31/2 years old

Did you have this evaluated at an Apple store genius bar? If so, what was the specific reason for the failure? There are many components on a logic board.

yes - took it authorised dealer and report stated that the following needed replacing...SVC PCBA MLB and possibly the LCD if replacing those parts didn't work
I live in Japan, and just took my Macbook 13-inch, late 2011 built, in to the genius bar today. The entire thing froze up while I was trying to update the security updates on the weekend. Diagnostic test showed the logic card and one other thing need replacement, so that is what they are doing. I will be charged the flat rate repair fee of about 35,000 yen. I am wondering if the 15-inch and 17-inch Extended Repair Program for this same board might apply? I will be asking!
