I purchased a late 2007 iMac from a second hand retailer. When I try to add the serial number to my profile, it says it is in use by another account. Is there a way to get this corrected?

Chances are the seller did not follow the rules of how to Prepare a Mac For Sale
Contact the seller and have him do these steps or return the machine to him.
Actually, even more confused now. I really thought I added the iMac when I got it, but... I added an iBook a few moments ago, it confirmed and even sent me an email of the device added. When I went back in, it was not there. When I tried to add it again, it said it was in use by another account. Yes, I'm sure same account, same password. Think there is a slight issue with the profile database.
