Why can't I subscribe to podcasts on my iPad?

In my iPad, in the Podcasts app, I can find podcasts, but the "subscribe" button for the podcasts, and also the download buttons for the individual episodes, are greyed out for most (but not all) podcasts.

Any idea why?
