Do i pay for a message sent by imessage

Hi,

When the iPhone is at home or on a WiFi Network then iMessages are free.

SMS will still cost as per your carrier service.

On the Mac iMessages is free (you are connected to the network).

SMS Forwarding is sent via your iPhone and we are back to the carrier service again.

IF the iPhone is only connecting via a carrier service then data changes apply for iMessages as has been stated.

To be clear.

iMessages is an Account on a Mac version of Messages

It send iMessages and the service also tends to be referred to as the iMessages service.

On an iPhone or other iOS device the App is called Messages and it can send iMessages or if to an non Apple phone (or unregistered for iMessages iPhone) it will send SMS messages.

Messages/iMessage when going to another Apple device do not cost anything. If Messages/iMessage is configured to use AIM, Jabber, GTalk or other traditional chat services, there is generally no cost, unless the service you have configured happens to charge (unlikely, but it is a big world and anything is possible).

HOWEVER, if you are are sending a message to a non-Apple phone, and that ends up being an SMS text message, then cell phone company SMS per message charges may apply (for both you and the receiver). It all depends on what each of your cell phone accounts charge you for SMS text messages.

The only thing to add to what Bob has provided, which is excellent information, is that iMessage uses data, just like email. So, in essence, you would be using a portion of your data allowance when you send an iMessage, but there is not a specific per message charge as there can be with many cellular carriers and SMS. Just some additional clarification.

iMessages was replaced by Messages so I guess you pay.
