May 26, 2015 7:39 AM in response to ksleeby rkaufmann87,Likely no need for either to be turned on. Your router likely already has a firewall installed an up and running. As for FileVault unless your computer is in an extremely unsecure location and your data is extremely sensitive File Vault is not necessary. I would recommend that you read Apple's Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support before turning it on and then decide if for yourself if it is really necessary.

May 26, 2015 4:36 PM in response to ksleeby rkaufmann87,Check the owners manual on your router to see if the firewall is on. To be honest I would be shocked if it is not. If you cannot find the manual look online or call them! I recommend against turning on OS X's firewal! 99% of the time OSX security and network settings can and should be left to their default settings. OSX is EXTREMLEY secure if just left alone!!
