Q: Firewall and FileVault on iMac.

Hi Everyone,

Good day.

Just need some advice. I just setup my new iMac and already was on the internet.

I just discovered the firewall and file vault was not turn on. I am rather concern and worries will I be running into problems as i was already on the internet for a while ?

 

I will be receiving file from Windows machine any advice ?

    Likely no need for either to be turned on. Your router likely already has a firewall installed an up and running. As for FileVault unless your computer is in an extremely unsecure location and your data is extremely sensitive File Vault is not necessary. I would recommend that you read Apple's Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support before turning it on and then decide if for yourself if it is really necessary.

    Hi rkaufmann87, thanks for your reply. No sure if there is the firewall and turn on at the router in case it is not on does it matter ? Will is have a problems and will affect iphones or devices accessing it?

    Check the owners manual on your router to see if the firewall is on. To be honest I would be shocked if it is not. If you cannot find the manual look online or call them! I recommend against turning on OS X's firewal! 99% of the time OSX security and network settings can and should be left to their default settings.   OSX is EXTREMLEY secure if just left alone!!
