Thanks, i appreciate the elucidation of the reality of a solution.  I'll be pursuing it.  I don't know what's involved so it may take me a while but it's a path with a heart. 

I own 27" iMac and with Yosemite and have cloned bootable copy of Snow Leopard on external drive. But I can't get past the white screen when I try to boot into it with my iMac (it runs fine on a friends 13"  Macbook Pro).

I also have Parallels 11 which cannot run it. All good suggestions much appreciated.

All iMacs after 2011 cannot natively boot and run Snow Leopard.

You can purchase Snow Leopard Server from the Apple Store for $20: 800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only); call your local Apple Store and be insistent that you want Snow Leopard Server.

You can install SLS into Parallels 11:

• What is the difference between the server version and the "standard" version (I've not used a server OS before)?
• Do you know if normal Adobe CS3 applications can run on SLS as they do on SL?

For our purposes there is no functional difference and I actually take the "server" apps out of the Dock so as to not be distracted by them.

I only have experience with both Adobe CS and CS2 in SLS and they both function fine in the virtual environment.  If they function in Snow Leopard, they will be fine in SLS.

Be sure to install Parallels Tools, so that Copy & Paste is functional and the "missing cursor" problem is solved:

Mac OS X Server arrived and for just $29.99 NZD but I have concerns about data loss and installing it using Parallels 11. See my steps below:

1. Select Install Windows or other OS from a DVD or image file
2. Select Mac OS X Server Install Disc and click Continue
3. Name and Location (see image)
   • Name virtual machine Mac OS X Server 10.6
   • Leave default location as /Users/matthewaccount/Documents/Parallels and click Continue
4. Virtual Machine Creation text appears and then immediately changes to a grey apple screen with loading wheel (all in the Parallels window).
5. Use English for main Language and click the "next arrow"

6. Install Mac OS X Server, click Continue and then click Agree for Terms & Conditions

7. This is a part that really does concern me. As you can see in the image below This stage selects only the Macintosh HD and not sub folders within it.   There is  enough space on Macintosh HD to install SLS. *But* I want to know if there is any risk of erasing or overwriting my data or the current OS also installed on Macintosh HD if I click Install?

You are doing well!

This is the step where Parallels will create a "virtual" Macintosh HD within its environment and then install SLS within that virtual Macintosh HD.

This will not effect your "real" Mac HD other than to create a ".pvm" file that will be about 16Gb in size and it could increase in size to the extent that you install applications, etc. within it.

I always recommend that you access and keep your data in the "real" Mac HD so that it is backed up within whatever backup system you use.

For me, it is NewsEdit Pro.

I'm a reporter and we use that too because it gives us inch count based on the printed fonts on the printed paper. Otherwise, if I am asked to write a 20-inch story, I would not know how long or short my story is if I use any other text editor, including word. And using number of characters is different depending on font and size.

If the paper does not change its font and size, I used to divide the total number of characters by 149 (believe me, it took some algebra to get that number).

In NewsEdit, I just enter the font and size and it does the calculation for me. Then there are other features we use in the newspaper industry.

Otherwise, I might use it to run the OS/X Server instead of running it on El Capitan. I have a Windows Server, and if that does not work, then I will install Windows 2000 Professiional, as I have about $40K in development software and mainframe emulators and compilers that stopped working when Windows 7 came along.
