Upgrade of iMac from 10.6.8 to Mavericks giving File System error

I attempted to upgrade my iMac from 10.6.8 to Mavericks (big mistake). On installation it failed saying File system verify or repair failed. Quitting and re-starting is just getting me back to the same point.

So I tried Disk Utility - Verify which says that the disk needs to be repaired. Verifying and repairing the disk says it's all OK.

Have tried re-booting multiple times but still fails at the same point.

What else can I do? Can I go back to how it was before?

Apple hasn't sold Mavericks for a very long time.

How did you get a copy and where did you get it from?

From the Apple website last night? Maybe it wasn't Mavericks then? Regardless I'm stuck with this problem.

App Store download? Have you booted off the DVD and run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.

Thank you. I've run Verify Disk and repair disk quite a few times but still comes up with error 'the volume macintosh HD could not be verified completely. File system check exit code is 8.

Verifying permissions brings up some issues (permissions differ) but doesn't give a repair disk permissions option?
