Q: Install Canon MP610 Printer on MacBook Yosemite 10.10.2

Hello,

I just got a new computer, a macbookpro running on yosemite 10.10.2 and I can't install my canon pixma MP610 printer&scanner on it.. I found a link Canon Printer Drivers v3.2 for OS X and tried to install it.. twice: but I can't find any trace of it anywhere on my computer after the installation has succeeded !

The only thing I could find was this http://www.canon-europe.com/support/consumer_products/products/fax__multifunctio nals/inkjet/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp610.…

and dowloaded the "easy-photo-print".. which seems to be working..but only for printing photos..which doesn't help my case..

I can use the scan from my printer via system preferences, but it won't print anything..

Obviously there is a compatibility issue between this printer/scanner and the yosemite system... But does one of you know a way to still make it work?!

Many Thanks

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

This installer will copy files to HD > Library > Printers > Canon > BJPrinter so that you can add the printer. However if you refer to the Apple article about supported printers for that Canon package you will see that your MP610 is not a supported model.

Seems odd that you can print from Easy Photo Print, because you would need a MP610 printer installed in Printers & Scanners in order to be able to print from this application.

This also seems odd that you have the Scan tab in Printers & Scanners but no printer, because you cannot have the Scan tab unless you have the Print tab.

Assuming that you don't have a supporting printer driver for the MP610 here is a link to the last MP610 driver that Canon released which was for OS X 10.8. There is a chance that Gatekeeper will block the installation of this driver as it is not signed for Yosemite. To get past Gatekeeper, Control-click on the installer and select Open from the pop-up menu that appears. Now you will be given the option to install the driver.

Once the driver installation is complete you can then open Printers & Scanners to add the printer.

    First of all:

THANK you PAHU! I followed your instructions and it works - Brilliant!

Here are a few things I'd like to ask on top,  if I may - for the sake of having a clean setup to avoid eventual troubles in the future + for the sake of understanding:

    >> I found it indeed (although, yesterday the "printers" folder was empty ! I have no idea why..- Do you?).

Weirdly, before following your steps, I had a look again and found several folders :

"Canon" folder, containing "BJprinter" and "IJscanner"; an "Epson" folder, containing "fax" folder, an "icon" folder (empty); "installedPrinters.plist"; and a "PPDs" folder...

I don't understand why I have this "epson" folder, as I don't have anything from epson..

=> Can I erase all.. or some of these folders ?

However if you refer to the Apple article about supported printers for that Canon package you will see that your MP610 is not a supported model.

    >> Yes, I saw that indeed.. But I felt one could eventually work it's way around it - as a matter of a fact, your advice works perfectly !

It would not go through with printing though, and when I would go to System Pref > Printers & Scanners > "options et fournitures..." yesterday (sorry, my computer is french) and select the "niveau de fournitures" tab, it wouldn't "collect informations"..

(Now, after following your steps - it does and shows the ink levels properly.)

    Many Thanks again!

Maybe you were looking at your user Library > Printers folder. This folder will contain the printer proxy for the created printer (the ones that appear in Printers & Scanners). So until you add a printer to Printers & Scanners this Library folder will be empty.

The Epson and Icons folder is created by the Yosemite installer. You can erase these folders if you want. You cannot erase the contents of the Canon folder nor the InstalledPrinters.plist file. And you could erase most of the files in PPD > Contents > Resources folder, as they will have been added by the Canon Driver v3.2 update you installed. You just need to ensure you leave the MP610 series.ppd.gz file in case you need to re-install your printer. If you do remove it then you will need to run the MP610 driver installer again.

Yes. Simply trash the Easy Photo Print application inside the Canon Utilities folder. But leave this folder on the Mac in case you need to install other Canon utilities later.

I would assume that this was a result of you having the ICA driver for the MP610 installed on your Mac. The ICA driver is used by Image Capture, an included scanning application in Yosemite, and the Scan tab in Printers & Scanners is like a light version of Image Capture. I've just never seen an instance in Printers & Scanners where you have just the Scan tab and not the Print tab.

I have never seen this happen before when installing the Canon driver. I note that the menubar in your image shows Install Command Line Developer Tools, suggesting this is the open application when this window appears about obtaining Xcode. As I don't get the same window when I install the MP610 driver I can only assume that you have additional software on your Mac that is causing this message to appear or it is a result of the driver being installed on a Mac set to run in a different language.

When you previously tried to add the MP610 I would guess that since there was no supporting printer driver installed, that is why only the scanner was created. Once you installed the supporting printer driver, this simply filled a gap and that is why you did not need to add the printer - as it was basically already created - just missing a supporting driver.

As for the driver location, the installer will have copied most of the files to /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter and the supporting PPD will have been copied to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources.

Assuming that both the Easy Photo Printer installer and the Canon Drivers v3.2 installer are still located in your Downloads folder, then you can trash both of these files and empty the Trash to free up some space on your Mac. And don't be concerned about having run the Canon Drivers v3.2 installer twice - there will only be one instance of the installed files on the Mac as the first copy will have been overwritten by the second copy. And then when you ran the single driver installer, they will have been overwritten again.

    Hope that answers your questions.

I have just migrated to Mac from Windows 10, and have a MacBook Pro Retina with OS X 10.11 - and I love it! I used a Canon MP610 printer on my Windows system, and I wanted to use it from my Mac. I also have a Canon MG3550, which works wirelessly and has AirPrint, but is nowhere near as good, quiet or fast as MP610.

With the help of this thread, I installed the MP610 drivers for OS X 10.8, and it works - I can print and scan - though obviously not wirelessly. The only problem is that when printing, I don't get a two-sided option on the print dialog, whereas I do when printing to MG3550.

Any idea how I can print two-sided to MP610?

To perform two sided printing the Canon driver has a menu called Duplex Print & Margin, as shown in the image below.

    Duplex_Print.png

If the MP610 does not have a duplex unit then you may not get this menu in the driver or it could be present but disabled.

Pahu, my MG3550 has a similar print menu, but the MP610 doesn't. I contacted Canon, who told me that Double-sided (duplex) printing is only supported on MP610 under Windows. Ho-hum. I feel Boot Camp coming on...
