Moving my iTunes library (on external HD) from my iMac to a macbook for travel and then back to my iMac.

I have my iTunes library on an external HD connected to my iMac. If I purchased a MacBook, can I disconnect my HD from the iMac and connect it to my MacBook and carry my iTunes library with me?

Yes, as long as it is the entire library and not just media. An entire library is everything in the iTunes folder, including the critical iTunes Library.itl file. Start iTunes on your Macbook while holding down the option/alt key and select the .itl file on the external.
