Help with sent items folder please.

My sent items folder shows 1729 sent items although I have deleted them and emptied my deleted folder. They are taking up 4gigs and I need the space. Help please!

every folder I look into shows empty except when I click on the mail boxes it still shows 1729 although emppty lol.
