iMessages not syncing between iPhone and iMac

iPhone on 7.1.2 and iMac on 10.8.5 - iMessages is not syncing. Several other problems also:

Some messages to other iPhone users show as green, not blue (getting charged as texts instead of free)

Messages don't always show up on one device or the other

On iMac, cannot turn off getting messages to email - I only want to get them to phone number. Option is grayed out.

Any ideas? Thanks ~

Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage

I had already done this. My phone number does not show up as a choice on my iMac and it does not let me add it. In addition, my email address does show up and is checked but grayed so I cannot uncheck it.

Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Sign in and see what happens.
