Book was gifted to me I already own

I was gifted an iBook that I already own. I redeemed the gift thinking (hoping) it would recognize I already owned it and maybe credit me the value. Instead, it redeemed, said it was downloading the book (which I already had downloaded), and then there was nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing saying I already owned the book, already had it on my device, nothing. Is there something I can do about this, or am I out of luck and my gifter just wasted their money?
