the language setting used in the help centre in iMovie has changed from english to a foreign language and i can't change it back to english. My system preferences are set to english. Should i require any help in iMovie i cannot understand the answers

I have not heard of this problem before. It might be worth trying deleting iMovie preferences and rebooting.
You can always access help via Safari at:
http://help.apple.com/imovie/#button-0
You can set the language at the foot of the page.

I've managed to bookmark the safari answer you suggested so I can a least access the help centre in english. I thought I might be able to change the language but I don't have any links at the foot of the page, maybe I have an older version of the help centre. Bit reluctant to delete iMovie preferences since I couldn't see any references to languages and I am not that confident.
