I would like to connect my macbook pro to my iMac using a HDMI port to a thunderbolt port. Is this possible? If so, how do I get my iMac to see the macbook?

What arre you trying to accomplish? User your iMac as an external screen? What iMac model do you actually have?
I would like to work off of my macbook pro and use the iMac as an external screen because it's larger in size. My iMac is a 27 inch OS X Yosemite. My macbook is a pro with a retina display. I plugged in an hdmi cable into my macbook and the other end of the cable is a thunderbolt which I plugged into my iMac. For some reason they are not seeing each other. Any thoughts?
