Messages app crashes on open, iPhone 5C iOS 8.3

Hello,

I have an iPhone 5C 16gb, running iOS 8.3. I've had the phone since August, but just today, my Messages app has stopped functioning. I still get notifications, but every time I open the app, it freezes on a white screen, and then closes back out to the home screen. I have tried closing the app (via app switcher), restarting the phone normally, and doing a hard reset (both buttons held until phone turns off), but nothing seems to be fixing the problem. I found the answer to this question on another post, and it worked! It turns out that someone sent me that spam text message that turns off your phone and it messed up the app, I sent a photo via the photos app to that person and it cleared up the problem.
