Google has stopped support on Apple TV 1st and 2nd gen, along with many other devices.
I had heard that google changed the API for youtube.
Why can't Apple just update the AppleTV to use the new API?
Correct, and the new API requires software that older hardware can't run (the aforementioned models of Apple TV, PS Vita, certain Smart Tvs etc)
If you have an IOS device running IOS 8 you can continue to use AirPlay from the current YouTube app. You can also mirror from a computer. The 3rd gen ATV is another option.
