Q: Macbook Pro not connecting with external optical drive?

I have a MacBook Pro I bought in 2011. I'm running Mac OS X  10.6.8. The built in optical drive died over a year ago, and I recently received an Apple USB Superdrive as a gift. When I try to connect it to my MacBook, it doesn't let me put a disc in. I tried rebooting, and when looking in the System Profiler I can see it listed as MacBook Air Superdrive, but I can't figure out why it isn't working. Any ideas?

Try this article on for size: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201788

It explains troubleshooting steps for those Superdrives. Usually it's just a matter of finagling.

    I appreciate your reply.

I read article but I'm thinking the key words that address my problem seem to be "The Apple USB SuperDrive and MacBook Air SuperDrive are compatible with any Mac manufactured after 2008 that doesn’t have a built-in optical drive."  But since my Macbook does have a built in optical drive (even if its nonfunctional) it's not compatible? At least that's what I read from the article. Sorry, i'm not super tech oriented. Thanks for trying to help. That was a useful link you provided, even if I'm not sure what my next step should be.

You would probably be right, then. Sorry, didn't take a look at the compatibility. It's likely a compatibility issue, even though your internal optical drive is non-functional. Computers are funny that way.
