Mac Pro Slowing Down, Why ?

I have a Mac Pro tower (5.1) , running OS 10.10.3 I do not use "Photos" at all. 500+ GB free space on SSD. 14 GB RAM.

A few hours after starting my Mac Pro it will start to slow down. Over time it gets quite slow. I am running one display only.

I'm looking for some suggestions on how I can fix, or improve this. I have run "activity monitor" it will normally show about 10%-15% CPU use, (85%-90% idle).

I have read through the procedure on the link below. For some it solved problems. For others, it did nothing, and in one case, turned their Mac into a "brick".

Try etrecheck and post the result here.

Resetting SMC could solve the slowness.

Yes!

I noticed that after posting. I successfully utilized "AdwareMedic" to remove these. AdwareMedic Said that it could not remove some problems associated with Firefox and directed me to a procedure to manually remove those.

I have rerun EtreCheck, and it is no longer reporting any adware. You know, I never noticed any "Ads" as a result of my adware. If this stuff is "adware" shouldn't I have been seeing "ads"?

What do you think about Resetting SMC ?

Not necessarily. Some adware doesn't actually show ads, it redirects you to a different search engine than the one you normally would use. Sometimes folks don't even notice this.

In other cases, adware will lay dormant for a while, silently tracking your web browsing and waiting until a later date to start showing you ads, in an attempt to obscure the true cause of the problem. (If the ads started right away, you would probably connect them to the download of that video streaming app or the copy of Photoshop you downloaded from PirateBay. If they don't start for a couple weeks, you probably won't.)

I am offended by your suggestion. (I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 on disk from Amazon.) I will assume it was an attempt at humor. 🙂

I have never visited "Pirate Bay" or anything similar. As you know, when people search the Internet by often get results completely unrelated to what they are looking for.

>> it redirects you to a different search engine <<

I avoid all things Google. However, I have seen various "pop-ups" wanting me to use Google or Google Chrome. That's about it along those lines.

I didn't meant to imply you specifically had stolen software, I just provided a couple possible sources of adware as examples. There are plenty of others, like downloading from Softonic or Download.com, downloading a copy of FileZilla, etc.

Thanks,

Actually, you are providing some good insight. I am one of those that has never been afraid to install things. I'm good at making backups, and as someone who's been using Macintosh since system 1.1 (1984) this is my first time being infected with something.

Going forward, I will periodically run "etrecheck" to monitor issues.
