Why is my Macbook Pro startup slower than the way it used to be?

My three-year old Macbook starts slower than it used to be. I have tried Disk Utility and I have deleted a number of files already. I also tried deleting applications. System information provides that 3.76GB out of 4.9GB is still available.

What could have caused this problem?
