Do I really have to pay £25 to ask Apple why my Macbook Pro charger has stopped working after 18 months?

Is there any way of talking to Apple to ask them about my broken charger without paying them to tell me its broken?! Surely 18 months of use for a charger that came with a laptop that cost £2800 isn't too much to ask for?
