Tried to get settings for nonexistent account with uid LocalAccountId

Hi all,

I have an early 2013 Mac Book Pro 15" retina.

The other day Messages stopped working for me - I got a Not Delivered message every time I tried to send a message.

Since I've had the Mac a couple of years now I decided to do a fresh install of Yosemite thinking that would solve the problem and give me a clean slate at the same time.

I therefore backed up, reformatted the main drive and reinstalled Yosemite. When it first booted up I started setting things up and went to test the Messages problem was fixed - it wasn't!

I have seen two symptoms of the problem I'm currently experiencing. I suspect they're related so thought it prudent to post both in the same question:

  1. I am able to select a contact to send messages to but sending a message instantly fails with a notification: Not Delivered. Reviewing the console log reveals the following...

  2. I am unable to select a contact that I know is using iMessages (my wife - testing with her iPhone). No matter what contact I choose their contact detail turns red indicating they're not registered on iMessages. Attempting to send a message then results in the dialog "Your message could not be sent. +44 xxx xxxxxx is not registered with iMessage". Reviewing the console log reveals the following...

Is anyone able to help please?

    Hi,

There are various things you could try:-

Deleting the com .apple.ichat.plist and com.apple.imagent.plist

Deleting the IDS item in the Keychain

Trying the same iMessages details in another Mac User account.

Trying an PRAM/NVRAM reset or Safe Boot

Or trying the iMessages account on a different Mac.

All of these will either show it is local to the Mac User account or related to the Apple ID use by that Mac at the iMessages Server end.

If it appears to be the server end the only fix is to contact Apple Support.

Politely ease your way from the Level 1 Script led people to a Level 2 support person.

State you have an Account/Apple ID issue with iMessages at the iMessages server and could they check.

They are like to ask you to jump through some more hoops and may also involve engineering (Apple are aware and are looking for both Triggers and answers).

Hopefully you will get someone who will get on and reset the account.

The issue is somewhat caused by iMessages using unique Logins for each device.

This in turn means if it fails fro one device it does not fail for others.

The downside of that is it sounds like a software or hardware issue (Level One Support).

The Unique login for the Mac is the Auth Token in the Keychain which uses the Mac's own Serial Number.

Cheers Ralph, some great advice there.

Just checking you noticed this is a fresh install onto a wiped hard drive. I didn't transfer any settings from time machine or other macs either so totally blank canvas, bar the iCloud user.

I've tried some of the things you suggest for debugging...

Deleting the com .apple.ichat.plist and com.apple.imagent.plist

Tried this, no joy - also fresh install?

Deleting the IDS item in the Keychain

    Tried this, no joy

Trying the same iMessages details in another Mac User account.

Haven't tried this yet - will try in morning.

Trying an PRAM/NVRAM reset or Safe Boot

Haven't tried this yet - will try in morning.

Or trying the iMessages account on a different Mac.

iMessages works successfully on my Mac Mini server with the same icloud user account.

Does this help suggest whether the issue is user related or server side?

    Thanks again,

    HI,

Some people refer to "Fresh" as to mean they stored the User Account somewhere and then Wiped the Disk but then put back the User Account.

If you do mean that this is a new Mac User account as well and the newly created items I mentioned did not improve things then there is only one cause left.

That is that the Apple ID used my iMessages has become flagged at the iMessages server as "Dodgy" in some way.

At present we have not been able to determine triggers - it just seems to happen to people - although transferring/migrating a Mac User account from another computer and hence the IDS: AppleIDEmail-Auth Token does not match the Mac's Serial Number and looks like illicit use of the account.

We also know that Apple added pop up Error message after the iMessages ver 7.0.1 update that started to use the Serial Number that looks like this.

Since then we seem to be coming across 'silent failures' but slightly further on in the login process (Looks like a partial Login)

One is the Contacts all turning red and "Not Registered with iMessages" showing when you try a different Contact.

Another is the attempted sent message is quickly marked with an alert message that says "Not Delivered".

As each Login from each device is unique it is expected that the Apple ID will work on other Macs or iOS devices.

It does tend to prove though that the issue is at the server end.

It seems only contacting Apple Support can fix this but it does take speaking to Level 2 personnel and getting them to check the iMessages servers.

Apple Support normally deal with Software and Hardware issues covered by AppleCare or by payment.

Apple ID account issues are free to fix.

This is why you need to get past the Level 1 person as they are Script led.

On the more recent reports posted by people coming back here to explain are suggesting different responses now.

Some get involved with protracted tests whilst the Engineers also become involved, asking for Logs and other data.

In these cases the call tends to end with the Support person saying they will call back and the account being reset overnight.

In some cases the Support Person does seem to effect a reset there and then.

There are also lots of things in between with delayed resets most of the time.

Well thanks again, especially for the extent of the advice you've given me.

One thing I can add to the loop is I had a memory fault a month ago so my laptop had a new logic board fitted. I used my mac mini as a replacement while it was getting fixed. I got the macbook pro back and about 2 weeks later these two problems started. Not sure if its related or similar to anyone else's stories..

Yeah, because I had a problem with Messages I decided to "start again" so didn't copy any data over from an old system. All I did was hook my account up with my iCloud account - not sure if the iCloud account is the problem though?

I have a call booked with Support this morning.

    Hi,

Occasionally some replies don't show up on first revisit to the page so my Reply is linked to the last one I made and this is an Edit of that.

Whilst you might be using your iCloud ID as the Apple ID in use in iMessages that is not the issue.

If you go to System Preferences > iCloud there is nothing to Enable the account for Messages of iMessages.

If you have multiple Apple IDs you can use them separately in iTunes, App Store, FaceTime, iMessages (Plus Apple ID as AIM Screen Name), Games Centre, Photos/iPhoto and so on.

iMessages is just one use of an Apple ID and the issue is with the servers that deal with that.

Much like when iTunes want to verify or update your Credit Card it does not stop all other activity with the ID.

    A quick update...

I spoke to a Senior Support member two weeks ago and did a number of tests. None were successful in finding the problem so I had to collect and upload some logs to Apple.

No one rang me back so I got back in touch with Apple to find out what was happening and spoke with another Senior Support member. He had a few other tests to run as requested by the technicians after reviewing the logs. None of them fixed the problem and I'm waiting again.

One thing they had me do is connect as a test account and try to send messages through that account - that didn't work either - so they are now left thinking it might be a problem in my Mac..?

Anyway will post updates in case it helps anyone else in the future..

    Hi,

Has there been any hint that they have looked at the iMessages Server and checked if it is there that your Apple ID is blocked ?

Whilst I understand that Apple want to find the cause and apply a fix that is good enough for everyone they do seems to be taking extra time with some people which others have reported that Level 2s can reset their ID at the iMessages servers.

One reason it might not work that is directly Mac related is if the Serial Number is missing.

In Yosemite use the Apple Icon menu top left and About this Mac.

The Serial Number is now amongst the info on show here.

The most common cause is that is is not "put back" on any Mother/Logic board replacement during Repair or Refurbishment.

If it was missing at the OS X 10.8.2 update it showed a Pop up with a code number to tell to Apple Support.

What we have been seeing more recently seem to be related but silent failure of the login (no pop up alert message) .

The Serial Number missing s one of the few things that will effect the Apple ID use as the iMessages ID across different Mac user accounts on the same Mac.
