Q: Will a swollen macbook pro battery cause the machine to reboot intermittently

I've got a 2010 15" macbook pro.  I've just upgraded the RAM to 8 gb and when I put the back back on, the track pad stopped working properly (would not click).  I changed it to tap mode so it functions fine but I can tell that the battery has swelled up a bit.  Also, around the same time, the computer reboots randomly.  Sometimes I can go days without this happening and sometimes it reboots a couple of times per hr.  I'm wondering if the swollen battery is somehow causing the rebooting problem.

One option is to remove the battery to see if the rebooting problem disappears but I've read that without a battery, the cpu speed slows down considerable.

I appreciate any comments or advice the community has.

Dear mineng:  I'm assuming that when you upgraded the ram you reinstalled the back cover correctly.Yes a swollen battery can cause a rebooting problem insofar as it may  start to fail.  Assuming that the battery is bad ( I think there's a way to show how many cycles it has remaining? coconut-battery??)** then it needs to be replaced. This you can do yourself, with the help of some tools, time and a new battery. try ifixit.com for a rough guide on how to do this

or....take it in to your local iFruit store

** apparently, if you Option+Click on the battery icon  in the menu bar, it'll tell you something....

I don't know if your MacBook Pro has an easily replaceable battery or not.  if not, see the ifixit thing

A swelling battery can fatally damage other internal components. Stop using the computer and get it to an Apple Store for a battery replacement NOW.

Your model does not have what Apple considers to be a user-serviceable battery. They do not sell batteries as replacement parts, only installing them in-store while you wait. Avoid batteries sold by third parties. Many are counterfeit and were defective before they left whatever sweatshop made them.

An expanding battery should be taken out immediately.  It matters not if the CPU is throttled.  What matters is the very real possibility of damage to the MBP.   Allan Jones is 100% correct.

    Ciao.
