Update iPhoto to Photos - disaster

I installed the recommended update for iPhoto to Photos on my iMac (Yosemite). An hour after installation i still get the message that my photo library has been migrated to Photos so can't be viewed or managed in iPhoto. However, I can't open - or close Photos. I just get the message that Photos is creating a library. There is no indication of how long this process is expected to take.
