My mac is extremely slow. The beach ball appears for prolonged periods of time during applications. Theres also a delay between letters as I type in web addresses. I've updated to most recent OS and it didn't seem to make a difference.

My mac is extremely slow. The beach ball appears for prolonged periods of time during applications. Theres also a delay between letters as I type in web addresses or when I'm writing emails. I feel like I'm watching my commodore 64 loading a program. I've updated to the most recent OS and it didn't seem to make a difference. I've run etrecheck but honestly can't make any sense out of it. I'm hoping someone on this board can help me figure this out.

Besides CleanMyMac2 your have some disk problems:

Macintosh HD (disk1) / : 998.97 GB (648.25 GB free) - 106 errors

It could be a sign of a failing hard drive. First order of business is to make a backup of your hard drive.

Next Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk permission and the disk. If you get any report of errors being found and repaired repeat until there is no report of errors.

Reboot normally and rerun Etrecheck to see if it still is finding errors.

After all the repairs are done check to see if there's any improvement in performance. Additional RAM will help with the performance issues especially with older Macs like yours.

If you still get a report of errors or are uneasy with knowing there were a lot of errors make an appointment at the nearest Apple Genius bar for a free diagnostic check. Better safe than sorry.
