I am a pilot (not professional) and I need to use a GPS on a tablet in the air to locate the airplane while flying with the software Mach 7 for Pilots.
I would like to know if the GPS of the IPAD Air 2 is a real one (means works with satellites) or a simulated one working only if there's a G3 or G4 connection ?

The WiFi+Cellular iPad has real GPS the WiFi only does not. There are 3rd party GPS devices from companies (such as Bad Elf) that provide GPS to a WiFi only iPad and they have companion software with it. Currently there is a bug in iOS 8.3 that prevents some of them from working, iOS 8.4 will remedy this.

If you do have a nanoSIM and you are on ground near a cell tower the iPad uses A-GPS which will speed up pinpointing your location by first using cell towers and then using the GPS satellites. It will till use GPS even without the cell tower availability.
But if you take out the nanoSIM, the GPS won't work right ?
Nope, it will still work.
