After updating my photo library, all my photos are now blank

Hello,

I got a notification that I needed to update my photo library. I did so, but now all my photos are blank. They're just grey squares when I scroll through them. When I click on a grey square, one of my photos does pop up, but for some reason they're not when I look at all of them. I do have an older Mac that hasn't been updated to the OS X Yosemite or any of the newer versions. Is this what's causing it? How can I get my photos to show up again?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I also found that when I click out of iPhoto, it now always says "updating library," but it never does anything new.

What version of iPhoto?

What version of the OS?

Where is your Library stored? If it's on an external, how is that formatted and how are you connected to it?

iPhoto 11, version 9.2.3

My Mac's OS is 10.6.8 is that's what you mean.

I don't know where my library is stored, but I don't think it's on an external as I haven't put my photos in any other place.

Back Up and then try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. It can take 3 or 4 goes for this to work
