My MacOSX Mail for OS 10.9.5 has been quiting after running in the background lately. Coincidently, AVG AntiVirus has found a few infected files in one particular Inbox. I'm concerned that OSX Mail has been corrupted... what steps should I take?

I've had AVG running in the background since February 1, 2015 and it's found two virusus either attached to emails or disguised as emails this month, do you really think uninstalling it is a good idea? I see from "About AVG AntiVirus" that it was updated today... interesting.

Try uninstalling it to see if it fixes your problem If there is no change, you can always reinstall it if you want to. There are no known Mac viruses at this time, so Mail in not likely corrupted.
I just turned off "Always on Protection".
We'll see if that has any effect within the next couple of days.
