Received an iMessage with emoji's instead of text

Pretty straightforward text came with most of the message in emoj's. Does anyone know why this happens? Is the problem at my end because Inreceive it, or the sender's?

I'm using iOS8.3 on ipad2, she's using a less updated version eg, iOS7.
