Cannot download song (err: -42018)

I have just purchased "Take a Chance" by "The Magic Numbers" using a 12 digit song code off the back of a Coke bottle, but when I try to download the song from the iTunes UK store I am getting the following message:

There was a problem downloading "Take a Chance / Take a Chance - Single / The Magic Numbers". An unknown error occurred (-42018)

What gives? I haven't had problems downloading in the past, although this is my first attempt via iTunes 7.0.1.8.

Anyone else seen this error before?

It isn't actually that UAC was blocking access... And disabling UAC might be a bad move in terms of security...

UAC is different in Vista than it was in XP. It changes the default so that your programs aren't treated as if they're being run by administrators.. this is a security change, and debatably a good one.

Anyway, you have to tell Windows to run iTunes as an administrator. I posted earlier about how to do that, so I wont bother retyping it.. But check it out:

I was having the 42018 problem and the authorization/deauthorization problem that were mentioned in this post thread.. and now I have neither one. So I hope this thread helps!

As for those of you using XP2... I'm not sure what to tell you. Except that I would check something to do with your user permissions. Is Windows running as an administrator? Does iTunes think so?

Problem solved! Someone from Apple removed the song
from my download queue and then added it again, which
did the trick. I had to shout at them to help me
though, so I suggest you do the same.

so who did you complain to? cause i would like to do this as well cause i paid good money for those songs and i would like to have them on my ipod!

I had this same problem - I'm running Vista RC2
(5744). I received the error code -42018 and also had
problems authorizing/deauthorizing my pc and
purchased music. After I disabled UAC (User Account
Control) in Vista, everything now works perfectly.
UAC seemed to be blocking iTunes from connecting to
the network correctly.

I am running Vista RC1 5600 which I just downloaded a couple of weeks ago ... to my knowledge RC2 has not been made yet niether has build 5744 if it is available please could you tell me where you got it from (thanks) ... and all my songs were downloading fine I am just about to restart my computer after turning UAC off. I got confused because everyone else said to deauthorise then reauthorise your computer and it just wasn't working. If anyone else is having this problem and running Vista I would reccomend trying this.

Hey everybody,

I also was experiencing the unknown error -42018 when attempting to download purchased music. Additionally, I was stuck in an endless authorization loop when attempting to play previously purchaed music. All this started when I installed the latest iTunes software 7.0.2.

I run windows XP Pro, and unlike the majority of users I actually set it up correctly with a dedicated administrator account, and regular user accounts instead of just running as admin all the time. For me, that was the cause of the problem.

The new version of iTunes software required FULL CONTROL privilages on the iTunes and iPod install directories for all user accounts that were using the program. (Previous versions worked fine, so this is a new thing.) Once I provided those permissions, iTunes worked correctly. Follow this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040 for information on how to provide FULL CONTROL to every user account.

I hope you all find this helpful in solving your problem.

Good Luck,
Bill
