iMac late 2009 very sluggish after upgrade to Yosemite

Hi: we have a late 2009 iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3) that has been very sluggish after the upgrade to Yosemite. Frequently pinwheeling, lots of hangups, and I can hear the processor running all the time. A visit to the local Apple Store resulted in a new video card but the issue remains. I ran the EtreCheck tool and this is what came back. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Problem description:

Your system has Avast antivirus installed which is 100% worthless and is likely the cause of your problems. OS X does not need an antivirus, cleaning, or other third party maintenance app. There are no viruses for OS X! There is a very small amount of malware though that can be easily avoided by using a little common sense. Follow the developers instructions for uninstalling Avast, then restart the computer and re-test.

The common sense!

  • Never download from a torrent!
  • If you get a pop-up, ad, e-mail or phone call advising your computer has been compromised, this is a SCAM intended to take your money.
  • Keep OS X up-to-date.

After uninstalling run another EtreCheck report and let us look it over to see if there are any additional issues.

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hogs on the OS X system.

The additional benefit is that you'll stop Google from mining your data when you surf the web

https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375081?hl=en

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox

The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.

You, also, have iAntivirus installed. Another useless antivirus app. Search the web to learn how to properly uninstall iAntivirus off of your Mac.

Update, 5/28/15 Thought Avast was gone but I see that it was not. It is now. Thank you. Ran EtreCheck again. Free RAM is much better.
