How to connect direct to a Thecus NAS from macbook pro

Hello, i've been painfully enduring this for a month now. Inconsistent speeds directly connecting a Late 2013 Macbook Pro to a Thecus NAS N7700. I used a kanex USB 3 to Gigabit Ethernet port, Static ip on macbook pro and static ip on the nas. Thing is that sometimes, the speed is very fast. Sometimes, it is very slow. Am I missing out on something that will make this connection consistently at gigabit speed?
