If your camera does not add GPS tags, continue to use iPhoto for the time being. iPhoto version 9.6.1 does still work well in MacOS X 10.10.3. The update did not uninstall iPhoto, just removed the Dock icon. Just drag it back to the Dock from the Applications folder.

May 28, 2015 8:14 AM in response to léonieby briegull,I just came back from a three week trip using my iPhone6+ for my camera (first time without an SLR in my long life!) I was quite pleased with it, and in going over the photos with Photo on my iOS I found that the GPS data is preserved, meaning that when I "get info" I get the map, all the way down to a specific building, and see exactly what church that was or where that sheep was!
I was less pleased with the interaction with iCloud, however. I had photo stream turned on, but not the icloud library. The photos did not synch with my iPad air (in spite of having an internet connection), and I resorted to using Airdrop to copy them. On returning I turned on the iCloud storage. Now I have a couple of thousand of photos on my iPad that I want to delete and just reload from iCLoud because what was in the cloud duplicates what I had loaded on with Airdrop. How do I do that? I tried connecting to my mac and itunes, but that doesn't work anymore for photos!
