Q: Verifying carrier update legitimacy

I'm getting daily reminders to update the carrier setting on my iPhone 6 but after reading about malicious updates being pushed by illegitimate devices impersonating Verizon cell towers I'm reluctant to do so, similar to being wary of installing a malicious software update on a PC. How can I verify the authenticity of the source pushing the update?

I can verify that Verizon did just issue an update.

How are you getting these prompts? Regardless, go to settings, general, about and if there is a legitimate carrier update, you should get a popup to install it.
