I can't hear incoming voice messages on a 4S except on speaker

I bought a used Iphone 4S but can't hear incoming voices messages except on speaker phone, the updates are current, and the volume setting are on high.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Check this support document for suggestions. If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound quality is poor on iPhone - Apple Support
