icloud mail keeps going offline on Macbook

I set up Apple mail to include three email accounts, one of which is an icloud mail account (me.com). When I noticed that my Macbook was no longer receiving mail via icloud, I checked online status, saw that it was offline, and clicked on "Take icloud online." That had no effect. How can I take icloud mail online effectively?
