You don't gain anything by changing the file extension.

i have an assignment that requires the film to be in mov. format
Use the Finder to duplicate the file and then edit the name by single clicking on it to highlight.
Change the name and then the file extension from .mp4 to .mov. Test playback with QuickTime to confirm it works.
