Time machine won't do incremental updates

I restored a new MacBookPro from a Time Machine backup of an old MacBook.

I said "yes" when asked if I wanted to "adopt" the history of the backup.

But Time Machine won't do incremental backups.

The disk is 500GB. The data on there is 355MB. Time Machine says there isn't enough room to backup.

Have tried disconnecting the drive and switching it on and off.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Reset the TM to backup to a different destination.

Keep whatever your 500GB disk is.. intact as is..

Is it a time capsule? if so it is a very old one..

Simply plug a USB drive into the TC or directly into the computer.. you can get 2TB for $100 or so now.. Use that for new backup..

If you don't need the history you can wipe the 500GB disk and start over.. but I would not recommend you do that unless you are 100% certain you have all the files out of the backup you will ever need. Once gone .. it is gone for good.
