A friend loaned me an old iPhone 3 -- I lost my 5. We wiped it clean, but it was jailbroken. I want to restart to non-jailbroken state, but it is not showing up as a device in iTunes and it doesn't appear in Preferences > Devices. How can I do this?

When you jailbroke, you lost all support from Apple. I will say that this article may help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.
Put it in DFU mode (Google it) and Restore it in iTunes.
I came back to edit this -- that I have tried DFU -- but I suppose my timing is off. It keeps blanking for a couple of seconds, then coming back to the pineapple. I will keep trying.
Depending on how the jailbreak was done, it may not be possible to get past it. Some jailbreaks alter the baseband, and those are generally not recoverable.
Found it. Until this evening every site I saw said that to go into DFU mode, press power for 3 seconds, then keep holding it and press Home for 10. I happened upon a YouTube video that said (1) power + Home for about 10 seconds, until it goes dark; (2) when the screen goes dark, release power but keep Home pressed. Finally, iTunes detected the iPhone. The title is "How to Unjailbreak ANY iDevice running iOS 8.x & 7.x & 6.x"
Not that it matters now, but that should have been a first-generation iPhone, not a 3.
