Automatic swipe between applications

Why is my Mac automatically swiping windows when I go between apps. I'm not using the track pad. I'm simply clicking on an icon on the doc to open up an app and the display swipes automatically to that app! I sometimes like to have everything on my desktop, layered so I can easily go between apps and view things at the same time. Why is it doing this? It doesn't have anything to do with my trackpad settings because I'm not even using my trackpad.

MacBook Pro, iOS 5.1

If I am understanding your post, what you see is the expected behavior. When you open an application, it shifts to the foremost application.

Usually, I've been able to have a document open, like in Pages, and go to the internet and leave my document on the screen. It doesn't swipe it out of the way. This only started happening a couple days ago.

I'm able to view email on top of a document, but when I go to open a safari page it swipes everything out of the way. So I'm unable to have safari on the desktop with the other things in the background.
