I accidentally purchased a book this week that I bought some time ago. May I return for credit?

Are you sure you actually purchased it? If you are using the same AppleID as the original purchase, if would have simply downloaded (unless of course it is an entirely different version of the same work).
Otherwise, contact iTunes support: https://getsupport.apple.com/Issues.action
