DIsk Utility won't allow me to erase my 2006 MacBook

I getting rid of a 2006 MacBook but I want to erase confidential files on it first. When I open Disk Utility and click on the erase tab, the appropriate fields are greyed out. What is another way to clean this besides putting it in the dishwasher?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5), MacBook is late 2006

Boot into the Recovery partition (assuming you are running Lion 10.7).

<OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support>

From there you can run Disk Utility and erase the boot partition.

Or use a bootable external disk (such as a bootable clone via SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner).

Or The original Mac OS X distribution media (CD set or DVD) can also give you access to Disk Utility.
