Does the mic on Apple ear pods work with iMac 2011 for live chat while playing WoW?

Does the microphone in Apple Ear Pods work for in game chat while playing World of Warcraft? I have the ear pods plugged into the headphone port on the back of my computer and they work fine with iTunes but I have not figured out how to test the mic in the ear pods. I opened system preferences/sound but the mic does not seem to be active.. Is it possible even to use ear pod mic with an iMac?
