How do i get my music from my phone to my iTunes?

I recently had to get a new hard drive and so i lost all of my downloaded songs. but i still have them on my phone because it was backed up on the cloud. I went to try to add new songs for the first time with my new hard drive and noticed i can't unless i check the box "sync music" under settings for my iPhone. but if i click that box it says it will erase all of the music on my phone and add what my iTunes music library is now. Is there anyway to prevent that from happening? I have a large amount of songs that were not purchased so any ideas on how to not lose them would be much appreciated.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss. To use a device with a different setup you transfer the old library from a computer or a backup directly to the new setup, not the device to the library. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
