Q: Photos re-uploading my whole library and more

Ah, well. It took about 3 weeks to upload all of my photos, but then it was done and life was good. Came back from a vacation and tried to upload about 100 photos using Image Capture, which has Photos as a destination. That locked up, and after about 15 minutes and no response to cmd+shift+esc, I used the power button to force a reboot.

Now, Photos is trying to re-upload not only my entire library of 12,500 photos, but apparently about 2,500 MORE photos than I actually have IN the library. And that's despite the fact that the whole library still exists in the cloud, and is visible on iCloud.com.

So now at the bottom of the photos app, I have this. Who knows what joy awaits me 3 weeks from now, when this upload of ~1,800 more items than I actually have in the library finishes.

Already tried the library rebuild; it completed but nothing changed. Any advice would be appreciated.

Man, that's tough if that's really what's happening.

One thing I would say is that I encountered a similar situation. I don't recall now exactly what I'd done, but it gave the appearance of uploading everything again. In fact, it did not. Whilst the network was pretty busy for a few hours, it finished, rather than taking many days as before. It was clearly uploading a lot of data, but definitely not everything all over again.

I would give it a day or two without further interference. You might get lucky. Let us know.

Thanks, and I hope you're right. I'll let you know how things proceed.

Interestingly, the iCloud library (top) and photos app (bottom) are not too far out of sync.

And suddenly resolves itself. I used Photos to post a few pics on Facebook, and when that was done the status changed as shown.

I have exactly the same issue as you - I'm hoping I will have the resolution as well! My Photos library is 68GB, and my upload speed is 300Kbps (about 60KBps) so fingers crossed!

Nope - 5 days and nights later, Photos is still - stupidly - chugging it's way through 10,800 photos that are already in my iCloud Photo library. But no more - I'm sick of this. Google Photos does what Apple software used to do - just work. With Google Photos new space-saving and duplication detection I'm better off with them, or at least no worse. I've disabled iCloud Photo Library, which also means I've canceled my €2.99 a month subscription to Apple for extra storage.

Just so you know, if you repair your library as described in this Apple document, Repair Your Library, it will cause Photos to upload all your pictures again (from Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support).
