Safari, New Tabs

I just started using Safari as my default browser and have imported my bookmarks from Chrome. Everything seems to be working fine except I'm wondering how I can set Safari so that when I click on a bookmark on my favorites toolbar, a new tab opens. Currently when I'm on a page, for instance my email or whatever, and I click on a bookmark on my favorites toolbar, it opens in place of whatever I was viewing. I'd like it to open in another tab. How do I do that? I can't find the answer and it's probably that I'm not wording my search correctly.

Thank you!

Hold down the command key while you click the bookmark if you want it to open in a new tab.
