Receiving unopened texts on a new device with same number

I recently damaged my Iphone 5 that I had for several years to the point where it would no longer turn on (this was on Tuesday). It is now Thursday and I received my new Iphone in the mail. When I turned it on (after inserting the SIM card), I assumed it would show me messages I received in period between when my phone died and when I turned on my brand new phone. So my question is;

Is there a way I can retrieve imessages/texts sent to my new phone while my old phone was dead?

If so, can you please list the steps involved?
