I had made downloads recently and I see a blue folder in my apps section, listchack. Is this important to the computer or unnecessary?

I recently made downloads and now I see a blue folder with the name listchack [this is not misspelled]. Does anyone know what this is? Thanks

From what I could see by looking into web sites that include the listchack name, I'd not want it

however your interests and mileage may vary. Note possibility of an adware or malware agent.

There are items to redirect your search, selectively guide your browsing to their chosen sites(?)

and add extensions or other parts to your OS X...

Note:Listchack uninstall page shows this (screenshot) http://www.listchack.com/uninstall

So this Listchack appears to add content that is not a usual item, I'd learn how to be rid of it.

And it may have been loaded along with some other software package of questionable worth.

Odd software download sites can package strange content that is in their own interests which

may be hard to remove, and that does little good for you or your Mac. Never heard of Listchack

before your post and my subsequent search. "Welcome to Listchack.com" site link from search

below, has nothing in it but a few words they expect someone to click on, one says uninstall.

• Listchack - google search results:

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=listchack&nfpr=1&start=0

Post back if you find out more about this. Also note some light reading on Tech Guides from safemac

has adware removal guide, malware, and performance guides; plus link to Adware Medic. This may

be of help if you wanted to know more about these items, and perhaps learn to look for & remove them.

http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/ includes manual removal methods, identifying, & etc.

Where did you most recently go and get items to download? Any free downloads or bogus utilities?

The cleanmypc and mackeeper, softonic, cnet downloads, etc can be full of extra junkware.

Anyway, perhaps someone will post something about your specific recent discovered mystery folder.

I'm curious if it's only the tip of some installed junkware iceberg. 😐

Instead of Listchack uninstaller, I'd be cautious enough to consider a suggested method by a contributor to

these Apple discussions, the author of TheSafeMac site above, if you don't want to use the manual

methods in Adware Removal Guide, per linked Tech Guides above. See "Adware Medic" there or

here, to see if you may want to use it -- instead of Listchack's buttons to their uninstaller.

{I wouldn't hardly want to trust an uninstaller tool from

same people who put unwanted content in my Mac...}

Here's a fairly good item to remove adware, some other items may persist; read & see how it works:

•Adware Medic - as linked from TheSafeMac:

http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php

Note this Apple support suggestion on how to remove items similar to searchmoose, & adware:

•Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support

My earlier post timed out while I was doing additional searching on this odd named item...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Where do you see this blue folder?

There's not much information out there about "listchack". The listchack.com site itself has only been there since February. Some of the language used on that site sounds like it may be adware. Are you having problems with pop-up ads on sites that shouldn't have ads (like this one) or being redirected to a different search engine than the one you normally use?

K Shaffer has suggested that you use my app, AdwareMedic... if that doesn't detect this thing already (which it could if this is a variant of something already known), I'd appreciate it if you could use it to send me a system snapshot (choose Take System Snapshot from the Scanner menu in AdwareMedic, then follow the directions to submit it to The Safe Mac).

Do you happen to remember exactly what you downloaded, and from where?

I also have just had this problem. I accidentally downloaded it while looking for software to convert: I think maybe from iSkysoft? However, I then decided not to go ahead and now I can't get rid of it!! I've used Adware Medic - and run it again after restarting - but the problem is still there. I downloaded their uninstaller but get a pop up to say the reset is successful while the resetting hasn't finished. Have attached screenshot. Help!!

Can you use AdwareMedic to submit a system snapshot? In AdwareMedic, choose Take System Snapshot from the Scanner menu. Then submit it to The Safe Mac (ie, me).

Your screenshot looks like you've got a Genieo infection, and there are some new Genieo variants making the rounds lately. I suspect you've got something AdwareMedic isn't detecting yet.

Hi.. Im not at all a computer person but I have found the same thing. Im having problems with my iMac. I ran Sophos and it detected heaps. I ran the one everyone is suggesting and it detected nothing. Apparently it only has a 30-40% detection rate but Sophos and Advast?? has 90-100% detection rate. I've been searching my terminal and typing 'mdfind' & the keyword. Mine was a Geneio issue but I have just come across listchack. Its going in the trash 🙂

You will end up installing the "listchack" malware by downloading the "VLC installer" from here: http://vlc.install-free.com/. (I made the mistake of not realizing /remembering that the proper place to download the VLC player is here: http://get.videolan.org/.) I ended up with at least three different apps on my Mac -- very annoying and very similar to the Genieo infection.

You may still have components installed. Did you try removing it with AdwareMedic? If not, try that now:

http://www.adwaremedic.com

Alternately, you can see the updated manual removal instructions here:

http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo

If you have removed everything, see:

http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/browsersettings.php

If none of that helps, let me know

(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com.)
