When connecting my iPad to iMac, the device does not show up on left hand column. Unable to import my photos. What's wrong?

Without knowing any details at all, quit iPhoto, restart the Mac, and force restart the iPad. In order to force restart the iPad, Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
Then try again.
It really helps if you provide some details in context to let people know what your workflow is when you try to import the photos, are you sure the cable is good, can you sync the iPad without issue???.....
