why has my airplay icon disappeared when it was previously available

My AirPlay icon has disappeared from the tool bar area and I'm unable to get it back in order to use my wireless speakers. The icon was previously available and suspect that a S/W upgrade to the latest iTunes may have caused the problem? can you advise please -thanks
